CHENNAI: The traffic scene in the city is going from bad to worse. A study by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has found that the average travel speed on major roads has dropped to less than 20 kmph. The average travel speed in the city came down from 30 kmph in 1992 to 21 kmph in 2008, the study said.
Kodambakkam High Road tops the list of dubious deceleration with an average travel speed of 15 kmph, about three times the average walking speed of a young adult. In 1992, the average speed was 25 kmph.
The average speed of motorists on LB Road in Tiruvanmiyur is 20 kmph, followed by GN Road in T Nagar with 21 kmph. A significant drop was also observed on Sardar Patel Road, LB Road and Inner Ring Road. The average speed on commercial roads was found to be 16 kmph and on non-commercial roads 25 kmph.
An analysis revealed that hold-ups at intersections were responsible for the drop in speed. The increase in the number of vehicles was the main reason — about 1,000 vehicles are added to city roads every day.
